How Long Does Translation & Interpretation Take?
When you request translation or interpretation services, alongside pricing, a major concern is likely “When will it be delivered?” or “How much preparation time is needed?” At Osaka Language Solutions, we strive for flexible responses to meet your schedule, but turnaround times can vary significantly based on the service type and content. Here, we’ll explain the estimated delivery times for both translation and interpretation, along with the key factors that determine them.
1. Translation Turnaround Times
Translation delivery times are primarily determined by the following factors:
Volume of Original Text
This is the most fundamental factor. The more characters or words in your source document, the longer the translation will take. There’s a limit to how much a professional translator can process in a day.
- Estimate: An experienced translator can typically process about 3,000–4,000 Japanese characters per day for Japanese to English translation, and approximately 2,000–3,000 English words per day for English to Japanese translation. This includes the time needed for initial translation, with additional time required for proofreading and quality checks.
Specialization & Difficulty of the Document
Compared to general business documents, highly specialized texts in fields like law, medicine, IT, or technical papers require more time for terminology research and deep content comprehension. As a result, they tend to have longer turnaround times.
Language Pair
Language pairs with a large pool of translators, such as English ⇔ Japanese, allow for relatively faster turnarounds. However, translations involving rarer languages may require longer lead times due to the limited number of available translators.
Desired Quality Level
Speed-focused services like MTPE (Machine Translation Post-Editing) will have shorter turnarounds, while high-quality translations that include rigorous checks by multiple specialists will naturally require more time.
File Format & Layout
Easily editable formats like Word or Excel allow for smoother progress. If you provide PDFs or image files that require transcription, or if complex DTP (Desktop Publishing) work is involved, additional time will be needed.
Regarding Express Service for Short Turnarounds: If you’re in a hurry, we can offer express service for an additional fee. This might involve assigning multiple translators to work concurrently or handling tasks during weekends or evenings. However, please note that expedited delivery typically comes at a higher cost than standard service. We also advise against unrealistic deadlines, as they can risk compromising quality. We recommend allowing sufficient lead time for optimal results.
2. Interpretation Turnaround Times (Preparation Period)
For interpretation, “advance preparation time” is far more critical than “delivery time.” Ensuring ample preparation time allows interpreters to perform at their best, directly contributing to the success of your interpreting assignment.
Interpretation Mode & Specialization
- Simultaneous Interpreting: This mode demands intense concentration and specialized knowledge, requiring the most time for advance document review and preparation. Ideally, interpreters should be confirmed and materials provided at least one week in advance, or several weeks ahead for large-scale events like international conferences.
- Consecutive Interpreting & Whispering Interpreting: While not as extensive as simultaneous, it’s advisable to provide materials several days to a week in advance, depending on the meeting content and specialization.
- Escort Interpreting: If the focus is on general conversation, assignments can sometimes be arranged with just a few days’ notice.
Interpreter Arrangement Period
The number of highly specialized interpreters or those for specific language pairs is limited. The sooner you consult with us once your event dates are set, the higher the likelihood of securing the optimal interpreter for your needs. Last-minute requests may be difficult to accommodate, or they might incur a surcharge if an interpreter can be arranged.
Importance of Material Provision
Interpreters thoroughly review all provided materials—such as meeting agendas, presentation slides, participant profiles, and specialized glossaries—to gain a deep understanding of the content. This preparation significantly enhances the quality of interpretation on the day of the event. Delays in providing materials can lead to insufficient preparation, potentially impacting interpretation quality.
3. How to Know the Exact Delivery Time
Turnaround times vary greatly depending on the specifics of your request. To get the most accurate timeline, please provide the following information when you request a quote:
- For Translation: Provide the document(s) you wish to have translated (as files).
- For Interpretation: Provide the date(s), time, location, content of the meeting, and information about participants.
Based on this information, our team at Osaka Language Solutions will assess the optimal schedule and provide you with a clear delivery timeline. If you have any questions or special requests, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
